As you may know we launched in 2009 with an incredibly high profile exhibition- supported by the likes of Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Wolfgang TilImans, Rankin, Banksy etc.. and covered by Vogue, l-D Magazine, The Evening Standard and The Independent.
“It is a celebrity turnout that would have been a coup for any well-established charity but this is
actually the launch of an organisation, called Art Against Knives.”
The Independent, 2009
Back in 2009- we were raising money for Oliver Hemsley, who was left in a wheelchair after being stabbed in an un-provoked attack in Shoreditch. Two years later, Art Against Knives is run by a team of volunteers, all under the age of 25! We have created OurSpace, a youth-led initiative that aims to reduce knife crime by engaging young people in deprived areas. Our aim is to provide creative resources and facilitate opportunities for young people within the multitude of creative industries in London.
This year we are launching AAK#2- yet another high profile exhibition and auction to raise money for the ongoing work of Art Against Knives and our youth-led initiative, OurSpace- and we need your help…..
We are looking for artists, galleries, studios and designers to donate work that can be part of an exhibition launching in east London in November 2011.
The exhibition will include work donated by AAK’s high profile supporters from the art and fashion world, as well as all of the exciting creative industries that thrive in London- it is set to be bigger and better than last time!
The exhibition is set to gain massive exposure and we would promote your generous support to our entire database, through press and on our website.
“The night which saw art stars and fashion protagonists packed in to frenziedly bid on each other’s work and enjoy crazy banter from host Jonny Woo, who even succeeded in daring Sotheby’s senior auctioneer Harry Dalmeny to a runway walk off as the crowd whooped and hollered in delight.”
Vogue, 2009 (about the first auction)
The success of AAK today is thanks to an entire team of young volunteers, some fellow art students, and some young people who have been born and brought up in the estates in east London. Working together, we have created something truly incredible, and it is now time to sustain ourselves so that no one else has to experience the devastating effect of knife crime.
We would love you creative lot to get involved… please email us if you’re interested in submitting work or donating any other kind of support! Can’t wait to hear from you…. exhibition@artagainstknives.com
